The lighting of the unity candle during the wedding ceremony symbolizes the acceptance of the new family that has been created between man and woman and between the families of the newly-married couple after the couple have taken their vows.

When one or both of the couple have been married before, the lighting of the unity candle can take on a deeper meaning of symbolizing the acceptance of a new parent by the children of the couple.

Unity Candles

When a single unity candle is used, either the newly-married couple, the mothers of the couple, the parents of the couple, or all of the members--bride and groom and parents--light the candle at the same time to symbolize the new family that has been created and their approval of that union.

If the candle is to be lit by several family members together, often separate tapers are lit first, then the center candle is lit from those tapers. Alternatively, long "fireplace" matches can be used, but are tricky to light properly--especially when nerves are on edge.

Unity Candle Sets

If a unity candle set is used, either the bride and groom light the center candle and the children or mothers of the couple light the tapers, or the bride and groom may light the two tapers, and the children in unison may light the center candle.

Often, if there are children on both sides of the family, more than two tapers are purchased, and each child may add his or her candle to create a display of unity with the new family that has been created.
